Women and Youth: Leaders of Conservation, Livelihoods and Sustainability

Along Tanzania’s coastal communities, women and young people are not simply beneficiaries of development they are already part of the systems that sustain communities and natural resources. They fish, process and trade marine products, engage in farming and small businesses, support households, and connect communities through social and economic networks.

Yet, women and youth are often not given enough space to participate in decisions about the resources on which their lives depend.

At SMART Youth, we believe that sustainable development becomes stronger when women and youth move from being participants to leaders.

Through our work, we support young people and women to take practical leadership in three interconnected areas: conservation, livelihoods and sustainability.

Conservation

Women and youth can become powerful voices for protecting marine and freshwater ecosystems. Through community awareness, restoration activities, responsible resource use and peer engagement, they can influence behaviors within their families, groups and wider communities.

Sustainable Livelihoods

Conservation cannot be separated from people’s economic realities. Communities need opportunities that allow them to earn an income while reducing pressure on natural resources. Our climate-smart livelihood work supports women and youth to explore sustainable enterprises such as seaweed farming, crab fattening and other marine livelihood activities, helping them build skills, income and resilience.

Sustainability

Real change goes beyond a project activity. It requires communities to have the knowledge, leadership, systems and confidence to continue taking action after a project ends. By strengthening local groups, encouraging peer learning and connecting communities with local institutions, women and youth can become long-term custodians of the resources around them.

From participation to leadership

We are inspired by what happens when women and youth are trusted to lead. They bring energy, creativity, local knowledge and strong community connections that can turn conservation messages into action.

Our vision is simple:

When women and youth have a voice in decisions, skills to build livelihoods, and opportunities to lead conservation, communities become stronger and natural resources have a better chance to thrive.

Women and youth are not only the future of conservation. They are leaders of change today.
