From Livelihoods to Conservation: Empowering Youth and Women in Coastal Communities

For many communities along Tanzania’s coast, the ocean is more than a source of natural beauty. It is a source of food, income, employment and hope for the future.

Yet coastal communities are increasingly facing the effects of climate change, environmental degradation and pressure on marine and coastal resources. These challenges affect not only ecosystems, but also the livelihoods of the people who depend on them.

At SMART YOUTH, we believe that lasting conservation must go hand in hand with sustainable livelihoods. This belief is at the heart of our HIFADHI Programme.

Through the Climate-Smart Initiative for Coastal Youth and Women’s Livelihoods, supported by the Ocean Community Grant – UK Development Fund, we are working with youth and women in coastal communities in Bagamoyo and Chalinze District Pwani Region, to strengthen climate-resilient livelihoods while promoting the sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems.

Why Youth and Women?

  • Youth and women are at the center of this initiative because they are important actors in their communities and have a direct connection to local livelihoods and natural resources.
  • Young people bring creativity, energy and new ideas, while women play important roles in household livelihoods, food security, local enterprises and community wellbeing.
  • Our goal is not simply to involve them as project participants. We want them to become active leaders in sustainable livelihoods and conservation.

Turning Skills into Opportunities

  • The project is supporting youth and women to develop practical skills in climate-smart marine enterprises, including seaweed farming, crab fattening, sea cucumber farming and mangrove beekeeping.
  • These activities are designed to create opportunities for income generation while encouraging communities to use natural resources responsibly.
  • Through training, practical demonstrations and community engagement, participants are gaining knowledge that can help them make better decisions about their livelihoods and the environment.

For us, the connection is clear:

Healthy ecosystems support healthy livelihoods.

When communities have sustainable livelihood options and understand the importance of protecting natural resources, conservation becomes part of everyday life.

Protecting the Ecosystems That Sustain Us

Livelihood development is only one part of the story.

  • The initiative also supports community action to protect and restore coastal ecosystems through activities such as mangrove restoration and environmental clean-up.
  • Mangroves provide important habitats for marine life, help protect coastlines and contribute to the resilience of coastal communities. Protecting these ecosystems therefore means protecting both nature and the livelihoods connected to it.
  • The project also encourages communities to recognize the connection between environmental waste and the health of coastal ecosystems.

From Participation to Leadership

At SMART YOUTH, we want to see a shift from youth and women simply participating in conservation activities to leading change within their communities.

  • A young person who gains skills in a sustainable marine enterprise can become an example to other young people.
  • A woman who develops a successful livelihood can inspire others while becoming a stronger voice in community decision-making.
  • A community that restores mangroves or keeps its coastline clean demonstrates that conservation is possible when people work together.

These are the changes HIFADHI seeks to support.

Building a Resilient Future

  • There is no single solution to the challenges facing coastal communities.
  • Building resilience requires a combination of knowledge, sustainable livelihoods, conservation, community participation and local leadership.
  • Through the Climate-Smart Initiative, SMART YOUTH is working with communities to build that combination placing youth and women at the centre of the process.
  • The journey is still ongoing, but every new skill gained, every sustainable enterprise established, every mangrove restored and every community member engaged represents a step towards a more resilient future.

Because conservation is not only about protecting nature.

It is about protecting the people and livelihoods that depend on nature.
